- Growing plants in hydroponic systems has many challenges. It offers many advantages of growing food in urban settings but has issues with plant nutrition and water utilization. Since plant nutrition from hydroponics is derived solely from water instead of soil creates other complexities. This generally involve water pH during the growth phase.
- Plants need inorganic nitrogen as generally formed in commercial grade fertilizers. This nitrogen conversion technology converts organic nitrogen (gas) from atmosphere to ammonia. Ammonia is generally further processed into an inorganic form of nitrates that plants can utilize. Converting atmospheric organic nitrogen to usable inorganic nitrogen is the current commercial scale process.
- Various nitrates are commercially produced and offered as plant growth commercial fertilizers. However, when these molecules are added to a water system in hydroponics, it creates an acidic water not suitable for plants. In order to balance water pH with addition of commercial grade nitrates, alkaline solutions are added to buffer the water back to a more neutral value.
- The problem arises as plant consume the inorganic nitrogen, the water pH tends to move more alkaline or higher pH. To balance the pH, now acid must be added to buffer the water back to more neutral pH. This means that more metallic ions are being added to the water and causes issues with constant buffering solutions and plants being subjected to ever changing pH levels that negatively affect their growth rates.
- Water Unlimited Technologies has the solution to this issue. We offer an inorganic nitrogen molecule that is neutral pH, contains 30% inorganic nitrogen, 20% carbon and 50% oxygen. It contains no metal ions and when inorganic nitrogen is consumed by plant roots, the pH is unchanged.
- Our molecule is PMCH, a “physical mesoporous carbonate hydrogel”. A carbonate molecule of inorganic nitrogen that is stable and neutral pH. The molecule is only broken down by plant root systems generation of protease enzymes. A symbiotic relationship involving, water, inorganic nitrogen, carbon, oxygen and hydrogen. As plants need inorganic nitrogen, they release protease enzymes to prepare nitrogen for uptake as needed. Having an abundance of inorganic nitrogen available for uptake without disturbing the water pH, advances plant growth significantly.
- The submicroscopic PMCH gel particles become entangled in the plant root systems transported by the water. The small particles are accessible to plant generated protease enzymes that breakdown the molecule in a timed release. Plants have a large quantity of available inorganic nitrogen to draw from over the growth cycle and do not have to contend with always changing water pH. A significantly more stable environment and all the inorganic nitrogen they need. Since PMCH’s inorganic nitrogen is pH neutral, over dosing has no negative affect on plant roots. Unlike traditional commercial nitrogen fertilizers.
